Reflection 1: The IT Masterplans

Initially before I attended the ICT lesson, I had always thought that ICT meant that we learn how to use computers in learning. However, after attending the first lesson, I realised that ICT actually meant learning about how to incorporate technology into teaching. I hope to improve on my teaching skills through this course, so as to make learning more meaningful and interesting for my students in future.

After going through MP1, MP2 and MP3 - the three masterplans, I learnt that the Singapore Education system actually has been emphasising on the use of ICT tools in teaching since the 1997. I remembered that I was in Primary 5 then, and computer lessons were held once a week. That was how I started getting exposed to IT. After Primary school, I believe majority have started learning how to use the computer by Secondary level. It has therefore dawned on me about the importance of learning such skills. Not only has IT become part of our everyday life, it has also been widely used in the workplace as well. That is when the objective of the government's knowledge workers and knowledge based economy has been met. And now I strongly feel that we are all part of such a workforce.

Teachers in the younger Y generation will be able to use ICT more efficiently as well. Thus, teachers in this generation will also be able to use ICT more effectively in the classrooms, thus making lessons more interesting for students. Now with the implementation of MP3 coming soon, I hope to learn more about ways to make students feel more engaged with learning. Therefore, I strongly agree that self-directed and collaborative learning are eqaully important - they must co-exist at the same time. Thus, I hope to learn more about such skills in future especially with regards to PW.
